Ep.10/ Alcoholism, recovery & the journey in between

“The beautiful thing is everyone gets their own definition.”

- Blaine Knapton

We’re going to start this one with a little disclaimer - this conversation is honestly an honour. It’s real, it’s raw and it’s very detailed about the effects and impact of alcohol on one’s life and loved ones.

**Please check in with yourself before listening/reading & know that we will be back next week if this one feels too much! For a child of an alcoholic or someone experiencing alcohol dependency, this episode may be triggering. Take care of yourself and know that this is someone’s personal experience and not medical advice.

There’s honestly no easy way for us to distill down this conversation into a text post - Blaine should really write a freaking book and we’ll plan his signing tour. In this epi we get into the nitty-gritty of his back story - discovering alcohol at an early age and the transition from partying with his pals to continuing to drink alone after everyone was long gone. What started as one would turn into many and eventually, people around him started to take notice. At the recommendation of a doctor, a stint in rehab, and a night in jail, Blaine let us in on the ups and downs of recovery and what it means to hit a new rock bottom when relapsing.

Blaine candidly accepts and honours this part of himself and invites others (ahem, Erin) to do the same. Ultimately, he has found success with sobriety through AA, sticking with the boundaries and habits that keep him healthy, and a rock-solid faith.

“When I come home I’m bringing myself home, not my problems with me.”

There’s one quotable moment after another and we aren’t going to let up about this one anytime soon. Blaine really helped us realize that everyone’s journey looks different and it’s up to them to define and decide for themselves when they’re ready for a change. Haley asks some hard-hitting questions as a follow-up to our alcohol episode and E faces what her path would have looked like had she not gotten sober. She has yet to attend a meeting, but it’s on the to-do list.
